LPF Candidates Committee report for October 2021
Last Meeting: October 4, 2021
Next Meeting: October 18, 2021
Candidates Committee is working on the following:
1) We are planning a training event for Sunday, December 12th in Central Florida.
2) We are asking for a legal opinion before recommending the LPF EC respond to fulfilling a request for the rebate of party assessment fee paid for by LPF Congressional Candidate Mike ter Maat at qualifying. We must file a letter with the Secretary of State described in s. 106.087(1)(a), Florida statutes. However, the letter is required to contain a clause binding the party as follows: "the executive committee will not make, either directly or indirectly, an independent expenditure in support of or opposition to a candidate or elected public official."
3) We will email all affiliate chairs asking them permission for the LPF to recruit candidates in their county for the upcoming 2022 elections as part of a statewide candidate recruitment push. The lower qualifying requirements for the reapportionment year should be taken advantage of.
4) We are identifying several members of the state legislature to oppose that are on the leadership track. The hope is that if we can recruit good candidates for some of these races, the pressure on these incumbents may have a positive disruptive effect on the status quo in Tallahassee.
5) We need training of affiliates to identify potential local campaigns where there are vulnerable incumbents or other opportunities for effective campaigns that are winable or build momentum for the LPF affiliate. About 80% of all municipal races in Florida are won by incumbents without contest.
6) Our efforts are to actively recruit candidates from current LPF registered voters. We discussed, if unusual opportunities occur (none currently known), the strategy of recruiting from outside of the LP (i.e. pursuade someone to switch affiliation to LPF and run) if the person is ideologically aligned and has unusual name recognition and an ability to speak well to our issues.
7) We want to clarify the types of services and support the LPF can provide candidates. A non-exhaustive list of services and support that may be organized or provided by the LPF for candidates generally:
Voter data acquisition and analysis support
Fundraising support (from development director)
Planning and research support (for campaign messaging, platform, talking points, issues)
Volunteer recruitment support (volunteer coordinator)
Staff training (consultants, campaign managers, social media, other staff, etc.)
Public relations training and support (media list, media training, press releases)
Arranging a preferred vendor or a cooperative lower rate through LPF or LNC agreement:
Graphics design
Printing & mailing services
Canvassing Software / CRM
Phone dialer system
Text message service
